The Sam Zabec Scholarship is Here!

If Sam Zabec played a role in your life, here’s your chance to show your appreciation and give back.

From 1966 through 2004, Sam Zabec was an active member of the Greater Allegheny community.  He was a member of the Engineering faculty, a brother and adviser to the Delta Kappa Phi fraternity (where the memories of 1501 Fawcett Avenue and 240 East Prospect are still green), and – perhaps most famously – the campus’ Residence Hall Coordinator and “Dorm Father”.  To the staff and faculty of the campus, Sam was a valued colleague.  To the students with whom he studied, laughed, and shared his legendary record collection, Sam was – and remains – a mentor and friend.

Sam is still a member of the community.  Just this past summer, he taught in the Summer Bridge program, extending his warmth and knowledge to a new generation of students.

The Samuel T. Zabec Trustee Matching Scholarship has been established to honor Sam and celebrate the impact he has had on so many lives.  Trustee Matching Scholarships are special arrangements.  The support from such a scholarship is matched by Penn State University, effectively doubling the money that is available to help students pay the costs of their education.  And the scholarship is endowed, meaning that it will continue providing support for the foreseeable future.

Our initial goal was to raise over $100,000 for this scholarship fund.  Over $107,000 has been mobilized already and we are not stopping there!

You can mail a donation using this form (requires Adobe Reader).

Or you can alternatively donate online via Pittsburgh Gives.  Please make sure you specify “Sam Zabec Scholarship” in the box below where it says on the page “Any special instructions for this donation?”.

For The Future

The Sam Zabec Scholarship is an element of Penn State’s current capital campaign.  For the Future: the campaign for Penn State Students, will raise $2 billion to support scholarships, faculty growth and development, faculty-student research projects, and improvements to infrastructure.  Over $1 billion of the goal has already been secured.  Greater Allegheny has raised over $2.5 million of its $5 million goal within this campaign.
